This section is all about the features of Storybuilder and the data within.

Minimum system requirements

  • Windows 2000 or XP

  • (It will run on earlier operating systems if MS Office is installed.)

  • Any hardware capable of supporting Windows would be sufficient.

  • 10M of disc space

  • MS Office 2003 (Excel & Word) for exporting data

Installation

  • Storybuilder 2.0.45 has an installer.
This will install the following files in the Storybuilder directory:

Version 2.0.45.exe

StoryBuilder45.exe
SB Program Data.mdb
blank.sb
STORYBUILDER.chm
Story Builder.bmp

Uninstall.exe

With Version 45 there is an additional menu item. See Tools dropdown menu, Settings. The following screen appears:

The default installation paths are shown. "Settings" allows the user to change the paths where the temporary files or program are located.  This is useful in cases of lack of administrator rights in the installation directory.  Storybuilder files (*.sb extension) and the SB Program Data.mdb file create temporary files during operation. The location of these can be changed with Temporary File Save Path & SB Program Data Path respectively.

A *.sb storybuilder file (a saved data file) can be located in any directory.  Every 10 minutes a back-up file with extension *.old will be created in the same directory as the Storybuild file, based on the temporary file.

  • Storybuilder 10u is a very old version. Upgrade to v 45 and superfile v17 recommended.

Note:
You should be able to see at least 3 frames: Bowtie list, Path list and the Main window with the graphics.  On low resolution screens path list may not be visible.  Storybuilder version 2.0.34 upwards is a solution to this problem.  On version 38 upwards there is an additional frame - Save Path List

Program Behaviour

Storybuilder has a very light footprint. It does not make any additions to the registry beyond attempting to associate the .sb extension with itself (which it will do if it has the appropriate permissions). It does not install any ActiveX components etc. No additional DLLs are required for the program.

Program Execution

Storybuilder files (with .sb extension) also need to be transferred to your computer because autosave will produce files automatically (with .old extension) in the same directory as the opened sb file. Should you wish to revert to a backup, simply rename the .old file .sb.

If you right click on an sb file and choose "open with" you can choose to associate files with an sb extension with Storybuilder (version).exe.  When you double click on an sb file it will then open in Storybuilder (for big files it can take a few seconds for the file to appear).

sb files can also be opened in MS Access which is sometimes handy for extensive editing work but not recommended for normal operations.

Network Operation

Although the sb file is accessed through a database connection, the software is not designed to allow multi-user access.
